Bob’s Bazaar Bizarre

Last month we finally got around to watching Bazaar Bizarre: The Strange Case Of Serial Killer Bob Berdella (Amazon, IMDB). It is a documentary about one of Kansas City’s most famous serial killers. This story has always held a bit of fascination for me since it is local and I am big KC history buff. Plus I am very smitten with the Westport Flea Market Bar and Grill, the bar/grill/flea market where Bob had a booth back in the 1970s and 1980s.

The movie itself was a disaster. The makers tried to graft some campy graphics and bad reenactments onto a serious documentary. It was like a bad film school project. Fortunately the content itself was really good. There were many interviews with police officers and detectives who investigated the case, journalists who covered it, people who knew Bob, some old prison interviews with Berdella, and even the only guy to escape alive. The content was able to just barely make up for the suckiness of the production.
