Music

April 28th, 2007

I just discovered that the opening notes of Europe’s The Final Countdown can wake my dog from a deep sleep.  She also appears to be wagging her tail in time with Billy Joel’s the Piano Man.  I think it’s time to change the radio station.

Bus Pub Crawl

April 23rd, 2007

This weekend’s highlight was an 8-hour pub crawl via the city bus, organized by John. The strategy was to start in Waldo, purchase a day pass, and bus our way north towards Downtown. It was a lot of fun with many cool people, both in our group and along the way, including Jeff, Ryan, Scooter, and Nick.

In order of appearance, we stopped at: Waldo Pizza, Bobby Baker’s Lounge, Sharp’s, Jardine’s, The Embassy, Bar Natasha, Zoo Bar, and 12 Baltimore. It was my first time at Embassy and Bar Natasha. At Sharp’s I ran into Angela, who is friends with Michelle and tended bar at our wedding. At Jardine’s we spotted Mike Shanin boozing it up with the other bluehairs. At the Zoo Bar I finally met the elusive owne, something that never happened during my years working across the street and closing the bar on Friday Nights. I called it quits at 12 Baltimore and a few others continued on for a couple more hours.

The funniest part was getting heckled at a bus stop. We were waiting for the bus at 45th and Main when some asshat in a Honda sped by and yelled out “Get a Hummer, Bitches!” I almost wet myself from the laughing.

Chicago

April 6th, 2007

Last weekend we headed up to Chicago for Michelle’s birthday and to chek out the corpses on display at Bodyworlds.  It’s a cool exhibit with lots preserved human bodies in various stages of dissection that gives you a very up close and personal look at the stuff under our skin.  There are no KC stops planned for this travelling exhibition, so I highly recommend getting out of town to see it if you can.

After spending time with the bodies we just wandered around lots of neighborhoods like Hyde Park, Wicker Park, Wrigleyville, River North, Streetville, Michigan Ave, etc.  Thanks to Hotwire we scored a sweet 1920s hotel right on Michigan Ave, next door to the Apple Store (swoon).  We avoided most of the chainy places there on the Magnificent Mile and instead checked out the city’s independent book stores, comic book stores, and porn shops.

To finish the trip we took the train home.  It was a decent train ride, but of course didn’t come close to train trips in Europe.  Chicago to KC took us 8 hours, while the same distanc from Edinburgh to London only takes 4 hours.  The difference is that the Europeans are investing billions in improving and expanding their rail networks and us Americans are barely putting enough money into Amtrak to keep the lights on.

For some reason I wasn’t in the mood to take pictures, so y’all will have to settle for last year’s Chicago photos.
