Alt.Country is a pretty expansive and amorphous musical genre, with influences from punk, rock, blues, bluegrass, western swing, rockabilly, and more. But now things like Gothabilly and Hip Hop Country are surfacing. Oh Jeeeeez.

Nostalgic for Nickerson Farms


Anyone else remember these great roadside spinoffs of Stuckey's? They had giant red roofs, a sit down restaurant, and huge gift shop, and a big bee hive. I particular remember the one in Emma, Missouri - east of Kansas City. Also one on I-35 between KC and Iowa. The whole thing started in Eldon, Missouri when a Stuckey's franchisee struck out on his own.

Y’all Ain’t From Here, Are Ya?

Here in Mizzourah (a.k.a. Missouri) we have many towns with names that have, um, unique pronunciations…

  • New Madrid: New MAD-rid
  • Versailles: Ver-SALES
  • Milan: MY-lun
  • Auxvasse: ox-VOSS-ee
  • Rolla: named after Sir Walter RALIEGH
  • Kansas City: Kan’ City

Plus other towns with names like Tightwad, Economy, Acid, Licking, Roosterville, Romance, Bachelor, Peculiar, Clever, Sunrise, Sunset, Plad, Paris, Rome, Elba, Braggadocio, and Knob Knoster (wow, TWO silent K’s).

UPDATE: Montreal and Toronto, Wet Glaize, Nevada (Ne-VADE-uh), Eldorado Springs (El-door-ADE-o).
