Photo of the Week

Found this place on the upper west side of Manhatten in 1998, while visiting my friend Marci. We never did go in to see what it was about, so ya’ll will just have make up your own story.

The new secret society

April 19th, 2003

“Under Attorney General John Ashcroft, America is becoming an Orwellian state where people are locked up and no one can find out why — least of all a compliant Congress.”

Read the Salon article (if you don't have a Salon membership you can still read the article after watching a brief advertisement). To the people of the US from the people of Missouri, our apologies for inflicting this evil man on the rest of the country.

Cool self-published poetry

Great site for publishing your poetry and reading some good stuff from people all over the world. Including my buddy Bill, the angstful American expatriot in London :)

The continued suckage of country music

April 8th, 2003

Last night was CMT’s video music awards, and besides June Carter Cash’s touching acceptance of an award (Windows Media clip) on behalf of her husband Johnny Cash for his Hurt video, the other highlight was Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow’s performance of their duet Picture. These two rockers exhibit more country music influences and respect than many “country” stars. For example Faith Hill, whose recent work doesn’t suck at all, but is utterly indistinguishable from Celine Dion. Also, Shania Twain’s performance with Allison Krause and Union Station gave us a rare reminder that there is indeed some real talent underneath the bustiers and choreography. Finally, isn’t Toby Keith’s fifteen minutes of preaching to the assholes finally up?

Would you like light biege, medium biege, or dark biege?

April 6th, 2003

Every day on my way to work I walk past a Starbucks that is located right between two local, independent coffee houses. Even though Starbucks has the worst coffee of the three, it has a steady stream of suburbanites going in on their way to work and after work sitting outside all up in their brief urbanity (in KC many of these people are easily identifiable by their license plates). What’s the deal? Are these people from the land of beige houses so adverse to variety that they automatically go for the most familiar option, even if it’s worst of the three?
