Please Raise My Taxes

This is not something that we hear very often, but I am asking for a tax increase. Like most other states, Missouri is facing an incredible budget crisis. Unfortunately our leaders are too cowardly to step up and solve the problem. After decades in the minority, the new Republican majority is showing exactly why they haven't been trusted with control of the General Assembly in generations. And the Democrat governor waited until the very last second to dust off his cojones and stand up to the pro-business/anti-family Republicans.

So far we have typical political knee-jerk grandstanding about "cutting the fat" and "reducing big government" - but the fact is that Missouri is already one of the lowest-taxed states in the union, yet most of our services rank in the middle of the pack. That means our government is already doing an incredible job with very few resources. Governor Holden has already cut over $1 billion from the budget in the last two yeras. There is no fat left to cut. Last year we cut into the the muscle and bones - this year they are proposing cutting off a limb.

"Cutting big government" at the state level means firing teachers and firefighters, canceling health insurance for poor kids, letting our shitty roads continue to crumble, and putting college out of reach of the middle class. This is why I reluctantly demand that my government raise my taxes. I don't want to, but if it means a teacher keeps her job or a senior citizen stays off the streets - then I don't really mind paying a little more.
